Michael & Fern, along with their sons Quinn and Jesse, have a deep-rooted family connection and history with Kaua’i. Fern & Michael first moved to Ha’ena on the North Shore of Kaua’i in 1978, on a venture to start a Na Pali coast charter boat company. At that time, fields of sugar cane, dusty plantation towns and bumpy roads surrounded the dense and lush interior of the island. A hidden paradise where people were still connected to the land and the pressures of the mainland seemed far away, Fern and Michael fell in love with this magical lifestyle and were married on Kaua`i.  As they got settled into Island life, friends & family from the mainland started to visit and soon Michael was asked to activate his Ministerial license here in Hawai`i and to perform Weddings at our beautiful outdoor settings. Neighbors and Island friends followed suit and very soon a small but steady stream of ceremonies became part of the calendar though not providing enough income to support the growing family.

For many years Michael worked in the Carpenter’s Union and Fern started a successful massage school and practice as well as studying Hawaiian Cultural Practices, Dance and Healing under some of Hawai`i most respected teachers. Eventually, she was certified as a practitioner and teacher of Huna, ancient wisdom and healing practices of Hawai’i.  Fern is also a student and teacher of hula and ukulele.

Over the years, as Kauai’s legend grew, more and more people were attracted to the exotic beauty of the Island and began to request wedding services. This coincided with the growing popularity of “Destination Weddings” around the world.  Fern was ordained in 1989 and joined with Michael in planning and performing Weddings & Special Blessings for their growing business.

In the summer of 1989, Fern & Michael decided to take the plunge and officially start what is today Kauai’s most reputable, award winning and experienced wedding company, \”Island Weddings & Blessings\”. Recipient of the ‘Best of the Best Kauai’ award and Kauai’s most long standing wedding company, “We have had years of experience working with our local vendors including hotels, restaurants, caterers, musicians and florists. We work with award winning photographers, videographers as well as amazing, talented entertainers.”

In 2012,  son Quinn received his ministerial license and officially joined Island Weddings & Blessings, adding to its modern image, and bringing new and fresh ideas to the family business. Meanwhile son Jesse retired from years of professional surfing around the globe to move back to Kaua`i and start a very successful business in Hanalei called ‘Wishing Well Shave Ice’, serving locally sourced fruit shave ice and other delicious treats as well as popular Island products here on Kaua`i. Jesse is currently residing in the Philippines, where he and his wife are starting a family, and developing an online graphic design business; TheMerle-Jones.com
